2D Beginning: due this Friday-- "weather" project (watercolor).

2D Intermediate: due this Wednesday (today)-- figure painting from photo reference (acrylic).

2D Advanced: due next Tuesday (4/27)-- block print or political social theme collage.

3D Beginning: due next Wednesday (4/28)-- two matching mugs w/ Korean style handles

3D Intermediate: due this Friday-- pot w/ lid

3D Advanced: ongoing... individual totems should all be cut, assembled, and painted by the end of next week. We then have to attach them to poles, dig holes in the ground, and place the poles in the ground.

Note: I'm happy to say that all classes have been going really well lately!

2D Beginning: due this friday-- figure drawing from photo reference. Next week, starting a new project that will carry over into Q.4

2D Intermediate: Large figure drawings have been turned in. Now working on figure paintings from photo reference, mostly shot in class. This project will carry over into Q.4.

2D Advanced: Figure paintings have been turned in. New project is an option-- 1) a collage with a political or social theme, or 2) a block print featuring a person or animal, in or outside of a house or building. This project will carry over into Q.4.

3D all classes: see photo below for deadlines on current projects. This will take us up to the end of Q.3, which is next week Thursday. The advanced class is proceeding with their totem pole project: this project will carry over into Q.4

2D Beginning: we're done drawing figures from live models, and are now getting started on figure drawings from a reference photo. Students were supposed to bring in 3 photos to show me late last week; most did, but some did not. They need to have a photo to work from for this project, so I am expecting that ALL students will have one by next Monday. The assignment is to do a tight (detailed) drawing of a full figure (head to toes). This will be an Ebony Pencil drawing on white drawing paper.

2D Intermediate: we're in mid-stream on large figure drawings from photos shot by students, or shot in class. These drawings will probably be due around the end of next week.

2D Advaced: same as Intermediate, but painting instead of drawing.

3D Beginning: pinch pots, tiles, and signature stamps should all be done at this point. Some have already gone through an initial firing in the kiln. Students are now required to glaze their pots and tiles. An assignment has also recently been given for them to build 2 coil pots. As these projects are going concurrently, we'll be on it them for a while.

3D Intermediate: this class was given a demonstration on how to make handles in the traditional Korean pottery method. They are to produce at least six handles attached to flat slabs of clay. After this, we will be making some pieces with handles (probably mugs), and then will be moving on to lidded containers.

3D Advanced: still working on subtractive plaster sculptures of abstract figures. This should wrap up by the end of the week, and a new assignment will also be given some time during the week.

3D Art, Advanced

This class is in the middle of a unit on subtractive plaster sculpture (carving from a block of plaster). The first project has been to do a relief sculpture of a face. Most of these are already in, but they have until next Tuesday in case they need a bit more time.

The next project in this unit will be an abstract human figure, again with the subtractive plaster method, but this time it will be a full round or free-standing sculpture. We'll be in the computer lab tomorrow, looking at some examples I'm posting on the AAW 3D Art blog (not posted yet--sometime later today or this evening).

3D Art, Beginning / Intermediate

All students have been working on pinch pots. They had three pots that were due last Friday. Most are in; a few still are not.

The Beg. class is currently finishing up on test tiles with texture--due tomorrow. Their next project is a signature stamp. Some are working on this already. These will be due sometime in the middle of next week, exact date TBD.

The Int. class is now working on coil pots--nothing fancy in this case--this is for them to demonstrate to me what their current skill level is with this technique. These pots must also have a surface texture. Due date is some time next week, exact date TBD. Next project TBD.

2D Art, Beginning

This class just recently turned in their typographic design poster (due last Thursday). Some are missing, and need to be turned in. Those that have already come in look pretty good overall-- mostly A's and B's.

We are now doing figure drawing from live models, and will be on this for the next couple weeks.

2D Intermediate / Advanced

We have been working on figure drawing from live models. We have been on this over the last three weeks. Tomorrow (Wednesday) I will be collecting five drawings from each student.

Our next project will be a figure drawing for Int., and a figure painting for Adv. In both cases, we will be working from photo reference. These photos need to be original, not from magazines, online, etc. Many students have said that they will provide their own photos. If they are doing this, they should have them in class by next Monday. Otherwise, we will take the photos in class.

Senior Project, 2D Art and 3D Art, 1/13/10

The senior project essay is due this Friday at the end of class.

Presentation of projects will be next week on Wednesday and Thursday. 2D Art will go first. We probably won't get to 3D until Thursday.

Don't forget-- an archive copy (for the school to keep) is due next week Friday.

Students have received detailed information on all of the above, several times (verbally and in writing), so they should all know what they need to do.

Final assessment for second quarter will be on Thursday January 21. All projects from second quarter must be completed and presented on this date.

Projects:

1. Ugly Jug / Face Pot (clay) -- pots must be glazed and fired (or painted).

2. Abstract relief sculpture (wood)

3. "Your choice" project -- students have committed on paper to what this project will be. This is a three-week project; the students' artwork should reflect three weeks' worth of work.

Still Life: all 2D Art Classes

All classes are working on the still life painting. This project has a tentative due date of Friday (this week), Dec. 11.

The level IV group within the Advanced class is finishing up on their "Seven Deadly Sins" project. This project also is due this Friday.

Project are due by the end of class for that day.

Senior Project, 2D Art and 3D Art - 11/30/09

Today the class was reminded that the semester will be coming to an end sooner than they might be aware of. Basically, we have four more weeks of working time in class (including this week)-- three weeks before Christmas break, and the week when we return. The following week we will be in the computer lab completing the Senior Project Essay.

What this means is that students need to really focus in on their work so that they will have the required eight pieces in their portfolio by the end of the semester. Portfolios will be presented for final critique on January 20 and 21 (Wednesday/Thursday).

Essentially, all work should be completed by January 8 (Friday, the week after Christmas break). For 2D Art students, their work should also be matted by this date, as there will be only a couple days of usable class time before portfolios are due. 3D Art Students need to take high quality photographs of their work and present them in some sort of portfolio for binder. These photos do not need to be matted, but it should be a high-quality presentation.

3D Art, Advanced - 11/30/09

We are finishing up on our "Ugly Jugs" project; construction should be finished by the end of this week.

We are also getting started on our next project, which will be an abstract relief sculpture. This will be an "assemblage" piece.

2D Art, Advanced - 11/30/09

Level III: we are just starting on a still life painting, using acrylic paint. We will be on this one probably through the end of next week, possibly a bit longer.

Level IV: current project is based on the "Seven Deadly Sins". Students will each choose two "sins", and create a picture for each sin, using the following materials:

Sin #1: acrylic paint with a "big brush" only-- 3" to 4" house painting brush-- on 16 x 20 canvas paper.

Sin # 2: a block print; either one or two colors.

Due date for this project: TBD, not in the near future.

The Holiday Card Illustration has been turned in. We are now working on a color mixing exercise, using tempera paint. This project is due this week on Wednesday by the end of class.

Our next project is a still life painting; again in tempera paint. We will be on this one probably through the end of next week.

2D Art Senior Project: Still Life setup

Every year in 2D Art at AAW, all students do a still life painting. The still life setup is created by the 2D Senior Project class.

This year's theme is: "Random Rummage". ALL 2D SP students are required to bring in at least three objects for the setup. The objects should be of medium to semi-large size (small objects become difficult to see from a distance).

This is a requirement for 2D SP students. Failure to bring in at least three objects will result in a 10% reduction of their second quarter grade. A 10% reduction is equal to a full letter grade. So... bring in some stuff!

The nice thing about having a theme of "Random Rummage" is that pretty much anything goes!

Senior Project, 3D Art

Students are continuing work on independent projects for their portfolio.

Reminder: at the end of the semester, all 3D students need to turn in a portfolio of their work. This means that all of their work will need to be photographed. Photos should be of reasonably high quality, and will need to be presented in a portfolio of some sort.

Students may shoot their own photos, but they need to be of high quality. Photos need to be taken with a camera, NOT a cell phone. Students may receive assistance with their photos. Students in Ms. Mantey's photography class may be available to assist with this. See Ms. Mantey for details on making arrangements for this.

Senior Project, 2D Art

Matte-cutting demo today. Practice cutting mattes today and tomorrow.

Students need to start selecting pieces that will definitely be in their portfolio, and begin cutting mattes for them.

STILL LIFE SET-UP

The 2D SP class will be responsible for creating a still life setup for an upcoming still life painting project for all regular 2D classes.

We will discuss this in class next week Monday, and decide on a theme. ALL students in 2D SP will be responsible for bringing in AT LEAST THREE objects for the still life setup. More details to come.
